The Secret Project
This project explores the hidden aspects of human nature and the way we navigate our relationships with one another. For this work, I first reached out to friends and colleagues across the country, asking them to collect secrets. Once I received the secrets, I created ceramic jars, each one carefully crafted to house these truths. These characters, are small protectors, keeping their secrets safe within their walls.
When the work was displayed, attendees were invited to view the jars, but the secrets inside were hidden. Only after purchasing a piece could the buyer uncover the secret inside. The intent was never to entice people into buying the work for the secret itself but rather to use the act of purchasing as a metaphor for how we approach relationships and commitments.
Just as we often treat each person differently—whether through assumptions, judgments, or invisible barriers—we all carry personal secrets that make us feel isolated or different. We may believe we’re the only ones who feel embarrassed or shy about certain aspects of our lives. This project challenges that perception and reminds us that, despite our differences, we are all connected by our shared humanity.
Ultimately, Secrets reflects the idea that committing to a person, idea, or action is much like purchasing a jar—there’s a level of uncertainty about what we’re truly buying into until we take the time to understand what lies beneath the surface. Just as we only know the secret after the jar is bought, we only come to truly know someone after we invest in them.
